The Society or in our native language, ‘Sean Tong’, originates from Ho-Ping Li (Peace Village) of Teo-Yeo County, Guangdong Province, China. It evolved from the legacy of Reverend Song Ta-Fung, who in his final years constructed and left behind a divine bridge, brandishing magnificently in the Peace Village until today. Since then, the villagers no longer fear the tidal waves that claimed countless lives while going across the river. Reverend Song Ta-Fung passed away in the tenth moon of the year 1127 due to exhaustion and fatigue while undertaking the construction of the bridge.

To commemorate Reverend Song Ta-Fung for his noble contribution to the people, his descendants built a monastery allowing the people to pay homage to him and named it ‘Pao Te’, meaning repayment of kindness. This marked the inaugural making of ‘Sean Tong’, the benevolent temple in the gracious name of Reverend Song Ta-Fung. Thereafter, by pursuing Reverend Song’s will to save the people and relieve every state of sufferings, ‘Sean Tong’ has been involved in many exercises including giving away free medical treatments and medicine, providing free caskets and burials and helping the less fortunate and sufferings. Amongst the benevolent acts, one of Reverend Song’s will is to perform ritual and recitation to bless the living beings as well as the souls of the deceased, leading both to the path to paradise. Hence, any traditional ‘Sean Tong’ whose Patron Saint is Reverend Song Ta-Fung should have Ceremonial Services that invoked blessing for the people and the spirits of the afterlife.

We incorporated our Ceremonial Services on the 8th day of the Twelve Moon in the early twentieth century. This day coincides with the Buddha Sakyamuni’s Enlightenment Day.

It has been many decades since we started our Ceremonial Services for the benefits of our people. Currently, the number of our members has grown over hundred. We also have a group of novices who reside into practising scripture recitations before coming into the limelight to perform spiritual services for our people.

To recollect the making of our Ceremonial Services, our elite, particularly Mr. Tan Soo Kee and Mr. Yeo Zi Giat have come a long and undergone the hard way to build what we have today. They undertook the role to teach the novices the principles and arts of scripture recitation and hymns, which are being passed down for generations thereafter.

In the earlier days, Mr. Yeo Kee Swee as well as Mr. Yeo Ek Kwong were invited to impart their gifted knowledge in the principles and arts of scripture recitation and hymns, which have benefitted every member to a great extend. In addition, Mr. Ng Han Meng was also invited to impart his special skills in playing the Chinese musical instruments and percussion. The mutual brawn of Chinese Arts from the elite equipped us with the required knowledge to do the finest Ceremonial Services. Not forgetting the others, we have Mr. Lim Choon Juay and Mr. Lee Siah Pheow, who are also our permanent instructors. Other mentors include Mr. Yeo Ah Hong, Mr. Goh Kim Chiew, Mr. Tan Bak Hong, Mr. Tia Kim Lim and Mr. Lim Peng Hiok.

The number of member in our long history is encouraging and beyond counting. The main characters include Mr. Koh Song Chuah, Mr. Eng Seng Siew, Mr. Lim Seah Moh and Mr. Yeo Liang Hong.

In pursuing our Patron Saint’s will to bless all sentient beings and the souls of the demised, we have built a strong foundation and a stronghold made up of excellent members to conduct our Ceremonial Services for our people. All these could not be made possible without the dedicated guidance of Mr. Lim Choon Juay and Mr. Lim Siah Pheow. We have earned a good name in the hearts of the public by our dedication to them and their loved ones’ well-being, by delivering them from the sufferings of birth and rebirth, and towards heaven. This is one mere charitable deed amongst the numerous ones we have in our agenda.
