Seu Teck Sean Tong Yiang Sin Sia has been in existence as a charitable organisation for many decades. A lot could be written about her as she is around for so many years. However, the irony is that all forms of documentation and records were destroyed during the Japanese Occupation. If one makes an attempt to write the history from scratch, one has to carry out some research and extracts information here and there, and also through word of mouth of older folks who were around at that time. Through it all, we are able to come up with a rich history of the association.

The Association was established in 1916 by Mr. Tan Sze Soon, Mr. Ngo Lek Seng, Mr. Yeo Yong Teo and Mr. Tan Eng Ann with the intention of helping needy people. In the beginning, they used the office premises situated at River Valley Road, Chop Seng Huat, which belonged to Mr. Tan Khai Eng. Due to the growth of members, they shifted their office to Tanglin and then again to New Market Road. In the year 1926, they vacated the premised to No. 101, third Floor, River Valley Road. As the members expanded more than one hundred, the Association began to form committees headed by different committee heads to take charge of various jobs. Together they work and strived as a team.

Mr. Tan Sze Soon was the first person to take up the Chairman post, the second Mr. Kwek Sin, the third Mr. Low Pei Si, the fourth Mr. Koh Peng Seng, the fifth Mr. Yeo Soo Kiat and the sixth Mr. Lim Siew Kit. In the subsequent years, the key posts were rotated amongst the Chief members or re-elected into the posts again.

In spite of this system, everybody discharged their duties very well and enable smooth running of all operations. During the period. The Association showed results in terms of growth in membership and progress. Not until the Japanese Occupation took place that all activities came to a standstill. The following year, under the leadership of Mr. Lim Soo Siang who proposed the merger of Thong Hong, Thong kheng, Phoh Kiu, Nam Ann and other charitable organisations to form the Blue Cross Charitable Institution Singapore. They operated their activities from Mr. Lim's house cum office at No. 4, Ord Road. As always, everyone carried out their duties wholeheartedly. If one were to mention about the Association, one would think of this reputable man, Mr.Yap Pheng Geck who had generously contributed towards the course of the Association and earned one's respect.

After the war has ended, things began to pick up, members rose to the region of seven hundred as compared to the very beginning when we first started. We were proud of our branch at Hup Choon villages and at that time, the Chairman was Mr. Sim Yong Kiah who held the position for 5 years consecutively. He was very familiar with the activities of the place and put all his effort in it. When he relinquished his post, Mr. Lim Kim Tia was the chief person-in-charge, with 2 assistants, Mr.Goh Peck Yew and Tan Shoot Thian. As the premises' space was insufficient, we moved to No. 54A, North Boat Quay which belonged to Mr. Sim Yong Kiah. At the same time, these people namely Mr. Goh Peck Yew, Mr. Tan Eng How, Mr. Goh Beng Keon and Mr. Tan Soo Kee were appointed to take charge of all related renovation works. After months of had work, the place was completed.

In 1949, the Association initiated a service that is to give free consultation and medicine to the sick. Through the blessings of the Committee Members, we appointed Mr. Tan Seow Poh and Mr. Tay Lip San as voluntary physicians. After that, another physician, Mr. Tan Soo Kee was recruited to help out in this service. A lot of people was benefited from this scheme. Later on, Mr. Goh Peck Yew was re-elected for 2 years. His contribution was tremendous. After that Mr. Yeoh Ngin Beng and Mr. Sim Yeow Kiah became Chairman respectively.

At the wink of time, the 39th batch has gone and at the 40th batch, the Chairman was Mr. Teo Soo Chuan who brewed the idea of giving free porridge to the poor. After this, he personally donated tons of rice grains to them. The rest of the people, executive officers and committee members did likewise. Five centres at North/South Bridge Road were set up to distribute porridge. It is said that he fed four to five thousand people per month. Besides, he also donated large sum of money to the Association, as well as to Blue Cross Charitable Institution.

In the precedent years, the Chairman and committees can only hold office for a year. Then there was a change of system. From the 46th batch onwards, they can hold the post for a period of 2 years. Form 1956 to 1990, a total period of 34 years has seen the formation of the 41st batch to 62nd batch. Within these batches, the 44th and 45th batch were chaired by Mr. Goh Choh and the 51st batch by Mr. Sim Yeow Kiah. The deputy chairman for the respective 3 batches was Mr. Teo Soo Chuan. The balance 30 years was chaired by Mr. Teo Soo Chuan. The amount of responsibility and effort put in by them were tremendous.

Throughout all these years we are fortunate to be able to have a core of honest, enthusiastic, hardworking and dedicated committee members. It is not possible, however, to recall all the names of these honourable people in such a short time. Nonetheless, we have named the following people: the late Messrs Yeo Yong Teo, Yeo Kei Swee, Ng Hang Meng, Tan Soo Kee, Tan Yong Song, Goh Beng Keon, Yeo Liang Hong, Eng Seng Seu, Goh Choon Siang, Chang Kim Choi, Lim Kiat Meng, Tan Hook Chian, Lim Kim Tia, Tan Chap Phua, Keok Sei Ngee, Koh Song Chua, Goh Lian Kia, Lim Shiew Nam, Chan Chiew Ean, Chan Bee Guan, Tan Kok Beng, Goh Yee Chew, Tan Eng Huan, Lim Tian Seu, Tan Peng Yeow, Tay Yew Lian, Tan Soo Phua, Yeo Kee Liang, Lim Sia Moh, Lim See Beng, Lim Chian Kee, Seow Chee Ye, Tan Bak Lai, Tan Bak Heng, Lim Peng Chep, Lim Ah Toh, Teo Jwee Moh, Phua Soo Kaw, Low Cheep Juah, Lim Heng Long, Goh Bak Ho, Goh Hak Kian, Lee Chian Yan, Sim Yong Kia, Goh Pei Yew, Sim Yau Kia, Goh Chor, Sia Yau Hak, Kou Tia Chai, Goh Hong Lim, Lim Bak Ke, Phua Seow Joo, Lien Chu Kiang, Tia Kim Lim, Goh Jap Koi, Lim Joo Kim, Yoh Tze Jun, Heng Tee Meng, Lee Kia Juay, Chan Tze Boon, Ng Ngat Pia, Chan Wee Chang, Tay Hock Soon, Siew Teck Kim, Lim Et Yong, Yow Yang Meng, Teo Soo Peng, Chan Keng Soing, Tan Bak Kim, Heng Soo Ngee, Chan Chiew Poh, Lee Choon Keng, Koh Nam Hoe, Goh Kim Chew, Chan Kee Kuan, Lim Choon Juay, Tan Bak Hong, Seow Yang Chew, Goh Nguan Peng, etc.

The list also encompassed those who continue to contribute to the Association. They are chief executive or deputy responsible for general affairs, treasury, office administration, worshipping, ceremonial performances, and medical relief and they work conscientiously as a team. In recent years, new blood is injected into the Association. These people execute their responsibilities very well.

It is not an easy job for the people that are holding high posts as they carry with them heavy responsibilities and commitments to their jobs. Sometimes they even have to personally attend to business matters regardless of the time. Thus the association is indeed grateful to have such dedicated people working for her.

The good works and charitable acts of the Association have been widely published throughout every corner of our country. Together with their determination and hard work, two branches have been formed. They are Toa Payoh Branch and Bukit Timah Branch. Their works even spread to neighboring regions. In Malacca, Muar, Pontian Kechil, and Penang, altogether there are 4 branches. Thus making up a grand total of 6 branches in Singapore and Malaysian territories. Every branch cooperated and worked cohesively with one another like one big family and also to honour the Reverend.

It is worth the effort to record all the events of the Association to serve as memory. As a record, we have started another new place at Bedok North Avenue 3 on 12th December 1982. Hope that all the one thousand and four hundred members of the Association would march ahead to honesty, charity, hard work and progress!

To recall the commencement of the Association, one could trace the origin to the Seu Teck Charitable Association in the Hong Zi Village (or Tua Goh Village) of Teo Ann District in the Province of Guangdong, China. Before 1916, the founder members of the Association invited the spirit of Reverend song Ta-Fung to Singapore to worship him. They then set up a charitable Association in Singapore with the similar name as in China. In other words "Seu Teck Sean Tong Charitable Association". Their acts of charitability spread for wide throughout the region of South east Asia. Today we have altogether one headquarter and 6 branches in Singapore and Malaysia. May we be part of the glory and pride of the association.

Talking about our History reminds us of our ascendants. Our ascendants, are the Elite of our Society. Every portraiture of our Elite is solemnly exhibited at the Entrance Hall of the Ancestral Hall. As the name of the hall implies, the exhibition purports a memorial objective for all their descendants. During their contemporary, they gave themselves up wholeheartedly for the mission of our Society to serve the public. They have fulfilled their charity horizon and laid a firm path for us to follow and push that horizon even further down the road. Their spirits and inspirations never ceased and that is one of their many accomplishments, which indeed is a living example for us to continue our pilgrimage to serve the community, the public and the country.
